Can you Mount pegboard on drywall?

Pegboard goes up pretty easily and can be installed over drywall or even bare studs (such as in an unfinished garage). The trick to installing it is to create a 1/2-inch or larger gap between the wall and the back of the pegboard.

How far does pegboard need to be away from wall?

Pegboard needs about 1/2 in. of ‘standoff’ space behind it so the hooks can be inserted. Plastic and metal pegboard panels have this space built in, created by the L-shape flanges at the edges.

How much weight can pegboard hold?

Pegboard manufacturers state the standard 3/16″ pegboard can safely hold 100 lbs of weight. The pegboard I tested showed a single peg can hold over 150 lbs without tearing or pulling away from the wall.

Are furring strips necessary?

If you’re hanging drywall on new ceiling joists, you probably won’t need furring strips. Standard drywall panels attach directly to the joists with drywall screws. If the ceiling is old, however, and you don’t want to remove the existing ceiling finish, furring strips can provide a solid base.

Can you wallpaper over pegboard?

Wallpaper The Front Of the Pegboard

Then glue it onto the front of the peg board. The wallpaper glue instructions may say to put the glue onto the wall/pegboard, but in this case you want to brush it onto the wallpaper. Otherwise, you will end up with a lot of glue squishing out through the peg board holes.

Can you attach drywall to ceiling joists?

Yes you can, but it is not always easy to do. The joists may not be perfectly spaced and you only have a 1-1/2 inch target for attaching two edges of the drywall. As well, the floor joists are often not perfectly on the same plane, with one or more of the floor joists being slightly lower or higher than the others.

Do you have to strap a ceiling before drywall?

The strapping serves as the nailing surface for the drywall. You should never install ceiling drywall fastened directly to the joists above. Without strapping, you’d be attempting to nail the drywall joints on only half of a side of 2x lumber.

What do furring strips look like?

If you’re unfamiliar with a furring strip, it’s best described as a long, slender strip that’s constructed from either wood or metal. In most cases, furring strips are 1” x 2” or 1” x 3” in size and can be applied either horizontally or vertically.

Can I hang pegboard with Command Strips?

I recommend that you use the 16 lb Command strips to hang your IKEA pegboard. Separate strips by tearing the pieces apart, do not fold. Cut down a Command Strip to fit on the spacers. Mark wall where pegboard will hang.
