For this edition of Fade Friday, we’re featuring Todd Hallowell’s SOSO 33 oz. jeans – the heaviest denims on the market. Known as the “breaker of legs” these jeans are roughly 2.5 – 3 times heavier than your standard pair of raw jeans, so just wearing them out for a day is an achievement in itself!
What is heaviest weight denim jeans?
It’s usually abbreviated as ‘oz’ or ‘oz. ‘ in writing. This unit of mass is used to categorise denim fabric by weight. The higher the ounces, the heavier the denim.
Still, most agree on the following categorisation of denim weights:
Less than 12 oz. = lightweight.12-16 oz. = midweight.Above 16 oz. = heavyweight.
What is heavy weight denim?
As explained here, heavy denim jeans are jeans made of heavyweight denim. They usually weight about 15 or 16 ounces as opposed 12 ounces. As a result, heavy denim jeans are usually stronger and more durable than traditional jeans.
13.5 oz. is considered mid-heavy-weight denim. It can be a bit though on your legs at first, but with time they will smooth out and be more flexible. Anything over 13 oz. is heavy denim that needs to be broken in, but it might not be as stiff as you might think.
What does 14 oz denim mean?
This unit of mass is used to categorise denim fabric by weight. The higher the ounces, the heavier the denim. That doesn’t mean a pair of jeans made from 14 oz. weigh fourteen ounces, though! The number refers to the weight of one square yard of the fabric.

Is selvedge denim better? Denimheads and industry people all agree that selvedge denim fades ‘better’ than non-selvedge denim. The slower pace of shuttle looms puts less tension on the yarn. And it’s a fact that shuttle looms tolerate more slubs in the yarn, which add character to the denim.
Denim jeans are denser and provide insulation in addition to being harder to make and wash. Denim jeans are usually manufactured commercially. In contrast, cotton jeans are lighter, more breathable, and easy to wash and make.
