Why is 100LL so expensive?

Written by Matthew Barrera — 0 Views

100LL fuel has many more “aromatic” hydrocarbons than mogas (auto fuel) in order to increase the octane levels and prevent fuel from vaporizing in your lines at high altitude. It’s much higher grade, so it costs more.

Is 100LL going away?

So in summary, Aviation engines present many unique challenges to the development of Avgas and as such there is yet no firm date to replace Avgas 100LL, but there can be little doubt that eventually Leaded Avgas will be withdrawn from use.

Why is 100LL more than Jet A?

Jet A fuel costs less than 100LL (avgas) fuel because it is less complicated and expensive to manufacture, less expensive to transport via pipelines, and used in significantly higher quantities leading to economies of scale.

The lowest price at which 100LL is available nationwide is $3.05. The highest price is $9.58. That’s a difference of $6.53 for the same gallon of fuel.

How long is 100LL avgas good for?

The short answer is that, under most conditions, the shelf life of avgas is about one year. If you are a commercial operator, this is the end of the discussion. For a private pilot, however, there are several points to consider. First, there is a large margin of safety in the one-year storage life of avgas.

Avgas is the only remaining lead-containing transportation fuel. Lead in avgas prevents damaging engine knock, or detonation, that can result in a sudden engine failure. Lead is a toxic substance that can be inhaled or absorbed in the bloodstream, and the FAA and EPA and industry are partnering to remove it from avgas.

Can you buy AVgas?

Anybody can buy av fuel going into an approved fuel container. You cant pull up and have it put directly into a car or your sled. After you leave the airport what you do with is your business.

What octane is 100LL?

Grade 100LL has two milliliters of lead per gallon and is rated at 100 octane when the engine is leaned for cruise, and at 130 octane when the mixture is set at rich. The fuel is designated as “low lead” because the previous fuel with a 100/130 octane rating contained twice as much lead, four milliliters per gallon.

Yes, you can mix any of our race fuels. But remember – if your engine needs an unleaded fuel, you don’t want to mix leaded with unleaded. Doing so would make a leaded fuel which could still damage oxygen sensors and catalytic converters.

Can I use 100LL in my lawn mower?

I have used 100LL in all my mowers, generator and snow equipment. It will probably burn a little hotter but it is cleaner as well.

Can I put avgas in my truck?

Using leaded avgas in a modern car would ruin components such as the catalytic converter. It would be like putting diesel fuel in your gas-powered car ? it just won’t run. However, Jet-A could be used in diesel-engine vehicles, but it lacks some of the lubricants found in road diesel fuel.

How much does avgas cost?

The average nationwide price for 100LL avgas was $4.73, with the lowest reported price just $2.40 and the highest $9.99. On a regional basis, the lowest average price for 100LL avgas is found in the Southwest, where 563 reporting FBOs have an average price of $4.36, with the highest charging $7.19 and the lowest $2.55.

This has to be a trick question and the answer is blue. Your mixture ratio would be 0% 80 octane and 100% 100LL as the 80 doesn’t exist anymore.

What is the difference between AvGas and race fuel?

AvGas octane numbers are determined in a different test than motor gasoline octane numbers. AvGas has a lower specific gravity than most racing gasolines. This means that if a racer tries AvGas and has not re-jetted, he can burn a piston because the air-fuel ratio is too lean and/or the engine detonated.

Why do planes use leaded fuel?

Lead is added to avgas in the form of tetraethyl lead (TEL) because it raises fuel octane and prevents engine knock and other wear in high-performance engines.

Why is AVgas more expensive?

This fuel is expensive for a number of reasons: The lead itself is expensive. The lead additive means that a refinery must shut down and clean the lead before producing other fuels, this means more refinery time and therefore more costs.

The first is that a two stroke motor will run hotter with AVgas. The higher octane of AVgas makes the fuel burn slower and more efficiently. Also the lead in AVgas helps to dissipate heat and acts as a lubricant.

What is the fuel burn for a Cessna 172?

The burn rate of the 172 is 8.5 gallons of fuel (32.176 litres) per hour.
